Or scenes this season maybe with Daenerys or even with Cersei, scenes The one thing I would say is I really had wished that I had more time She was jealous, alone, unloved, and paranoid. For her, watching Jon being embraced by the Northerners was like Viserys watching her be embraced by the Dothraki. She told Jon explicitly that never felt that once since she came to Westeros. Dany always wanted to feel loved and feel like she belonged. There is a line of sorts between Season 1 Daenerys and where we’ve landed now. Maybe that’s a good lesson: don’t get the tattoo until the show is over. Think of the people who got Daenerys tattoos. Think of the people who named their children Daenerys and Khaleesi. So, regrettably, one of the last shocks of the series comes not as another well-earned Martin surprise, but a terrible gut punch to the many fans who had built Daenerys up as a symbol of feminine power and survival against all odds. That’s why, for example, the writers decided to cut a crucial scene between Bran, Sansa, and Arya last season so that the death of Littlefinger wouldn’t be the slow twist of a knife, but a shocking slash of Arya’s dagger. But the HBO series has sometimes learned the wrong lesson from Martin’s skill and focused, in later seasons, on obscuring information in order to elicit shock. The evidence is right there on the page and in the episodes once you know where to look for it. Oberyn Martell, for instance, was always going to lose that duel in Season 4. Martin likes narrative surprises that feel earned in retrospect. In A Dance with Dragons Martin writes Dany’s thoughts: Like her brother Viserys she longs to go home. She and her brother were raised in exile after the Targaryen dynasty was torn apart and driven from Westeros. Promise me.’” But above all else, Daenerys fears isolation and never finding a true home. ‘Promise me that you will never turn against me. Or here she is in the book confronting Daario: “She clutched her captain by the shoulders. ‘They will turn on us at the first sign of weakness.’” I do not trust the slavers.’ I do not trust my husband. So why does it taste so much like defeat?‘ ‘If Hizdahr’s peace should break, I want to be ready. This is what I wanted, what I worked for, this is why I married Hizdahr. ‘How did this happen, that I am drinking and smiling with men I’d sooner flay? … This is peace, she told herself.
